More about Gemma
I have a passion for education in the early years sector and believe it’s critical to deliver the highest quality education possible to our young people who are under school age.
Where did you first learn about the Fraser Foundation?
I came across the foundation after an extensive search online for early childhood educator scholarships.
How long have you worked in early learning?
I have been working in the early learning sector since 2007, firstly as a Certificate III, then diploma educator.
What made you want to join the early learning sector? I have a passion for education in the early years sector and believe it’s critical to deliver the highest quality education possible to our young people who are under school age.
Why did you want to gain a Graduate Diploma in Early Learning? I would love to pass on my knowledge and mentor others, particularly younger staff who may not have the life experience of being parents, as well as advocate for all educators in delivering the highest quality learning programs whilst maintaining high quality interactions with children. After having my own children, it was made even more clear to me how essential the role of an early childhood educator really is, and I truly believe the first five years are the critical years for education in so many areas.
Where are you from and why has it been a challenge to further your studies? I grew up in North West New South Wales, and currently live and work in the Hunter Valley, NSW. All tertiary study for me has had to be done online as travelling to a campus isn’t a viable option for me. I have two young children under five and am the primary carer for them so completing any unpaid practicals of the early childhood education degree has been an issue for me as in order for me to be able to complete course requirements I need to have the children in daycare in order to do any work or prac components of courses. This is quite a financial strain on me when the pracs are unpaid, and also working full time in a service up until recently meant that I would also have to take unpaid leave or use annual leave to have the time off for prac.
What does receiving this scholarship mean to you? Receiving this scholarship means that I will have incredibly less financial stress on completion of my studies as my student debts will not be eating into my wages earnt as an ECT once complete. It will also mean that I can take employment as an ECT in a service of my choice that aligns with my philosophy as opposed to choosing the highest paying job in order to pay back student debts.
When are you due to graduate? I am enrolled in a graduate diploma of early childhood teaching at Swinburne Online and am due to graduate in 2025.
