“Working in this sector is so rewarding. There are so many small moments that are incredibly significant in a child's learning journey.”
What are you studying?
I am currently studying my bachelor of early childhood education and care through LaTrobe University.
How long have you been working in the industry?
I’ve worked in the sector for 10 years.
Why did you decide to do your bachelor’s degree?
I decided to complete my degree as I felt I was ready for the next level of challenge and responsibility. The other large factor was financial motivation, as a brand new graduate it's quite a pay rise compared to what I'm on now.
What made you apply for a Fraser Foundation scholarship?
I saw that there was an opportunity for more support whilst I was studying. There's a lot of pressure out there juggling study, work, family and more that every little bit of help is worth it!
What do you love about working in this sector and with children?
Working in this sector is so rewarding. There are so many small moments that are incredibly significant in a child's learning journey. From that first attempt at the monkey bars, to recognising their name in written form.
To be there to support and guide children as they navigate all of life's complexities is such a special privilege. I love being able to celebrate with the children during these special moments, to cheer them on as they learn how to interact with others with care, empathy and respect.
The incredible questions that the children come up with are intriguing and keep me learning too. What is rain? Where does the sun go? These questions and more inspire and provoke a lifelong love of learning and zest for life that is a daily reminder to enjoy the small moments. It's such a great career to be part of.
Why is this an industry that should have more people joining?
People should join this industry to follow a wild ride of inspiration. What other job encourages us to really look at the world around us and notice every small detail? What other career can we start by finding a ladybird in the playground and spark a whole project into flight, patterns, colours, camouflage, habitat, lifecycles and more? The possibilities are endless, and the learning is all around us, working with children helps to remember that passion and spark for life. No single day is the same in early childhood, we're so lucky to be a part of these children's lives.
